The American National Standard for centerfire rifle sporting ammunition, published by SAAMI. 375 pages: pressure and velocity performance standards, the test-barrel and test-equipment specifications, and — the part a gunsmith reaches for — the full set of cartridge and chamber drawings plus the HEADSPACE GAUGES section (Section III), which gives the authoritative gauge dimensions for shoulder-, belt-, rim- and mouth-breeching cartridges. For each cartridge the F column's MIN and MAX are the GO and NO-GO gauge lengths, and the M column is the datum diameter the headspace dimension is measured to. NOTE: SAAMI defines no FIELD gauge — that is a commercial addition.

- CIA Information Report — New Soviet 7.62 mm Semi-Automatic Carbine SKS, Submachine Gun, and 7.62 mm Pistol (14 April 1955, CONFIDENTIAL)
A thirteen-page CIA information report distributed 14 April 1955, classified CONFIDENTIAL and declassified in 2013 (CREST CIA-RDP82-00046R000500020007-7), reporting from the Soviet Zone of Austria and including a drawn sketch of the rifle. Two years of better access corrected the 1953 report's errors: this one has the SKS as semi-automatic and charged from a stripper clip through the top. Its real value is the security practice around the weapon and its AMMUNITION. On the range 'each marksman was flanked by a second soldier whose function it was to retrieve all ejected brass with his garrison cap (pilotka)', and every case was counted afterwards — the cartridge was classified, not just the rifle. The gate guard drew one of six obsolete PPSh submachine guns each company retained for occasions when personnel would be seen by Austrians: a cover weapon carried on strength so the real one stayed indoors. The report also names the rifle's manual, which was NOT classified and sat in the company orderly room.

A five-page CIA information report distributed 29 April 1953, classified SECRET / SECURITY INFORMATION and declassified in 2009 (CREST CIA-RDP80-00810A001000900006-5). Source: a member of the Krasnoselskiy Guards, Order of Aleksandr Nevskiy Rifle Regiment. It describes two new Soviet weapons issued alongside the old PPSh — the AK-47 and the SKS — with two hand-drawn memory sketches. NOTE: the report is marked UNEVALUATED and it gets two things about the carbine WRONG, which is exactly why it is worth reading: it says the carbine 'could be fired automatically or could fire single shots' (the SKS is semi-automatic only) and that 'the clip was placed into the magazine from the bottom part of the stock' (it is charged from a stripper clip through the top, over an open bolt). Its account of the SECRECY is first-hand and accurate: the weapons were military secrets issued only to the Leningrad and Far Eastern military districts, and only to troops in settlements away from inhabited localities.
