The FBI's 2014 memo that ended the .40 era never calls the cartridge a mistake — it says bullets had caught up, and lists “wear on the weapons” in its own words.

The Croatian-designed, Springfield-sold XD(M) told from the maker's own manual and catalogue — the HS2000 lineage, a grip safety that also locks the slide, the .40 S&W's rise and the FBI memo that ended it — with the trigger kit, tritium sights and weapon light fitted to one .40 examined against their makers' own statements.
