Rifles, Suppressors and Cost — What Fires Them, and What They Cost to Feed

The rifles chambered for each .17 rimfire in October 2026 with the makers' own prices, what a suppressor does and does not do on a .17, and availability and cost per round from sellers' own pages

The three cartridges have very different rifle markets. The .17 HMR is chambered by most of the major American rimfire makers in bolt, lever and semi-automatic actions. The .17 WSM is a Savage and Ruger cartridge in practice. The .17 HM2 is, by Savage’s own account, a Savage cartridge alone. This volume lists what the makers’ own pages show in October 2026, then covers suppressors and the cost of feeding each.

Prices are the makers’ manufacturer’s suggested retail prices as printed on their pages on 19 October 2026, or on the newest price list the maker publishes, dated where it is older. Street prices are lower. Only the makers named were surveyed; others (Anschütz, Bergara, Tikka, Volquartsen and more) chamber .17s too, and are left out rather than listed from second-hand sources.

9.1.1 .17 HMR

9.1.1.1 Savage

Savage says it offers “34 models” in .17 HMR.1 Its current pages, model by model:2

Where a model is offered in several calibres Savage prints one price range for the model, so the range above is the model’s, not necessarily the .17’s. Discontinued 93R17s still have pages (BSEV, BTV, TRR-SR, the B Series FVSS); they are not listed.

My own rifle. The 93R17 documented in this hub is a thumbhole model in .17 HMR. Every thumbhole 93R17 in Savage’s current catalogue has a 21-inch barrel, and so does mine. The Savage 93R17 dive identifies the sub-model.

9.1.1.3 CZ

The CZ 457 is made in .17 HMR as the American (24-inch barrel, from $729), Lux (from $749), Synthetic SR (20-inch, threaded, from $679) and Varmint (from $799). Every one is listed with a twist of 1:9 and six grooves. CZ prints one “from” price per model, which may be the .22 LR version’s.4

9.1.1.4 Henry

From Henry’s January 2025 MSRP list, the newest Henry publishes: the H001V Varmint Express .17 HMR lever action at $667 ($687 with a large loop), the H001TV Octagon Frontier .17 HMR at $667 ($687), and the brass-framed H004V Golden Boy .17 HMR at $744, with Silver ($809), Silver Eagle ($1,056) and engraved ($1,886) versions.5 Henry’s lever guns are tube-fed; with a rimfire that is no concern, since a bullet tip resting on the rim of the round ahead cannot reach a primer.

9.1.2 .17 HM2

Savage’s November 2025 guide says: “Savage is the only major firearm manufacturer currently offering rifles in 17 HM2.”1 Its current pages show three:2

Table 3 — 9.2 .17 HM2

No Ruger, CZ or Henry model in the Mach 2 appears on those makers’ current pages. Older Mach 2 rifles from other makers exist on the used market; their manufacturers’ current support for them was not checked. CCI’s warning on .22 LR rifles converted to the Mach 2 (Volume 3, §3.5) applies to any of them that started life as a .22.

9.1.4 Suppressors on a .17

This hub’s suppressor dives already cover the ground, and only the .17-specific points are repeated here.

All three are supersonic in every load. The slowest .17 load in Volume 5 leaves the muzzle at 2,010 fps, nearly twice the speed of sound, and there is no subsonic load for any of the three. The Suppressors by Caliber dive puts it plainly for the HMR: “Supersonic, no meaningful subsonic option, and the .17 HMR in particular stays loud. A can is a comfort device on both” (the other being the .22 WMR). The bullet’s supersonic crack travels with it; a suppressor takes the muzzle blast off the shooter’s ears and reduces flash, and that is all. The three noise sources are explained in How Suppressors Work.

The can must be rated for the cartridge. A rimfire can rated only for .22 LR should not see a .17 HMR, as Suppressors by Caliber, Volume 3 explains. Mack Brothers, whose older Lima can the hub’s .22 rifles share, rates its current Vapor for “.22 LR, .22 Mag, .17HMR, and 5.7×28” and does not list the .17 WSM.6 The .17 WSM, at 33,000 psi and the largest case of the three, needs a can whose maker names it; a rating for .17 HMR is not a rating for .17 WSM. The .17 HM2 runs at .22 LR pressure but is not a .22 LR, and the same rule applies: use a can whose maker lists it.

Bore size is not the constraint. A .17 bullet in a can made for .22 has more clearance, not less. Pressure, gas volume and velocity are what the rating covers.

Threaded barrels exist from the factory. Savage’s FV-SR and the B Series FV-SR, CZ’s 457 Synthetic SR and all three Ruger 77/17 WSM models are threaded; Ruger gives 1/2-28 for the 77/17.234 Threading a factory barrel that is not, a gunsmith job, is covered in How Suppressors Work, Volume 7.

The law is unchanged by the cartridge: the federal suppressor tax fell to $0 from 1 January 2026 under Public Law 119-21, with registration and approval unchanged, and Michigan permits hunting with a lawfully possessed suppressor. Suppressor Law has the detail.

9.1.5 Availability and cost per round

Two sources, read on 19 October 2026: the makers’ own web stores, where a maker sells direct, and one large online retailer, Lucky Gunner, whose caliber pages list only what is in stock.7

Makers’ own stores (box price, cost per round):

Hornady and Winchester show no prices on their own pages.

.17 WSM3 (all Winchester)45¢ (Varmint HE, 500 for $225)50¢ (Varmint HE, 50 for $25)

What the numbers say:

  • The .17 Mach 2 is the cheapest of the three to shoot in October 2026, at 22 to 26¢ a round, and it is also the one with almost no choice: two loads, two makers.
  • The .17 HMR costs 28 to 52¢ a round depending on brand and box size, with nineteen loads in stock at one retailer. That is several times the cost of bulk .22 LR and roughly in line with the .22 WMR (the .22 Rimfire dive covers .22 prices).
  • The .17 WSM costs 45 to 50¢ a round, from one maker. At its launch Winchester was reported to expect about $15 for a box of 50; in October 2026 a box of 50 is $23 to $25 at the retailer surveyed.8
  • Availability follows the number of makers. Savage itself warns that “certain magnum calibers, especially 17 HM2 and 17 WSM, may not always be readily available. These calibers may only be offered by one or two different brands in an area.”1 A single-source cartridge is one plant decision away from a shortage. The .17 HMR, with five makers surveyed here, is the safe choice on supply.
