Diana (RWS) Model 34 · Volume 2

The Model 34 — Forty Years, Three Triggers, and How to Tell Them Apart

From a $90 entry-level springer to the 34 EMS: the generations, the T01, T05 and T06 triggers, the piston that must match, and a field guide to identifying any 34

A Diana 34 bought in 1985 and one bought in 2026 share a name, a caliber, a barrel length and an action layout. They do not share a trigger, a piston, a scope base, a breech face or a stock, and some of those parts cannot be swapped one for one. Anyone who owns a 34 and intends to service it, re-scope it or order parts for it needs to know which one it is. This volume sets out the generations as the sources record them, notes where the sources disagree, and ends with a field guide to identifying any example.

2.1 The Cheap One in a Family of Three

The 34 was not designed to be a benchmark. Gaylord, who has owned 34s since the 1980s, describes it as “an entry-level, German-made Diana breakbarrel spring-piston rifle”, and records that when it was introduced “there was also a higher-priced model 36 that came with a rubber buttpad, front globe sight with replaceable inserts and a well-profiled stock with checkering. The model 38 was even nicer because it had all of those features plus a walnut stock. The actions of all three rifles were identical.”1 The market chose the cheapest: “customers voted with their wallets, and only the 34 remains. For many years, it was Diana’s best-selling model.”1

The early rifles were not refined. Gaylord recalls that in the very early 1990s they “retailed for about $120 at a time when a TX200 Mark II … sold for over $300”, came “only with a plain beechwood stock and the metal was finished very matte”, and “buzzed when they fired like a mason jar full of hornets. The triggers were heavy”.2 In another report he gives $90 as the 1990s price.3 He dates the change that made the 34’s reputation to “the late ’90s or even the early part of this century”, when Diana “tightened the tolerances of the powerplant parts to reduce the buzz, and the triggers got much better”.2 Diana’s own 2006 flyer for the new 34 Classic calls the 34 a “best-seller … which we sold many thousand times”.4

The Blue Book also records a Model 45, made 1988 to 2004, as “basically a restocked Model 34”, and a Model 64 of about 1986 to 1989 about which “records are not yet clear … if it existed, it probably was only a restocked Model 34”.5 Parts for the powerplant of a 45 are listed by the aftermarket alongside those of the 34, 36 and 38 (Volume 5).

2.2 The Number Was Used Before

The Blue Book lists a pre-war “Model 34 (Mfg. 1928-1940)”: “.177 cal., BBC, SP, blue finish, similar to LG 33, except with British market style stock and pistol grip.”5 It has nothing to do with the rifle of 1984 beyond the number. A pre-war rifle marked “Mod. 34”, with a pre-war Diana logo, is that earlier gun. Everything else in these volumes concerns the 1984 design and its descendants.

Gaylord also records that the “Panther” name was dropped because of a conflict: “they had to change the name to 34P to avoid infringement of another air rifle”.2 No other source was found for the reason, and it is given as his statement. The name is back in Diana’s 2026 range as “Panther 34”, so whatever the constraint was, it did not apply in Germany or no longer applies.

2.4 The Triggers: T01, T05 and T06

Diana names its spring-gun triggers with a T and a number, and three of them matter for the 34. The fullest description of all three is Gaylord’s June 2011 series comparing the T05 with the T06 on the same rifle.

T01. “The RWS Diana model 34 has been in production since 1984, and it began life in a plain wooden stock with the T01 trigger. The trigger blade of the T01 was made of stamped metal. It worked, but it was hollow in the back so it looked cheap. However, the T01 trigger was very adjustable and someone familiar with it could adjust it to a remarkable release.”6

T05. “Sometime around the year 2000, Diana changed the trigger design to the new T05 that had a solid trigger blade that was even straighter than the T01 blade had been. Unfortunately for Diana, they made the new trigger blade — and a couple other obvious trigger parts like the new safety bar — from plastic.” Gaylord’s point, often lost, is that the T05 trigger is not a plastic mechanism: “The trigger BLADE is plastic, but the blade alone is not the entire trigger. The actual unitized mechanism that is the trigger contains many metal parts … the trigger blade does not touch the sear.” It has one adjustment, a screw in front of the blade that sets the length of the first stage; pull weight and let-off cannot be adjusted. His 34P’s T05 released “crisply at 2 lbs., 10 ozs.”6

T06. The T06 has an aluminium blade and three screws. Gaylord’s 2011 description of them was explicitly tentative: the front screw sets the first stage, “the screw behind that, which is buried deep inside the aluminum trigger blade, is for adjusting the sear contact (I think)”, and a screw behind the blade sets the weight.6 Diana’s own manual settles it, and not quite as he guessed. It names the three screws “First-Stage Travel”, “Let-Off Point” and “Trigger Weight”, with clockwise turns reducing slack, making the let-off point heavier, and increasing weight respectively.15 The second screw is described as setting where stage two lets off, not as a sear-engagement adjustment. Diana’s catalogue summarises the T06 as “individually adjustable (Vorzugsweg, Druckpunkt, Abzugsgewicht)” and its key page calls it “three stage adjustable”, against the T05’s “two stage adjustable”.12 Gaylord found a single adjustment on the T05 of his 34; Diana’s key calls the T05 “two stage adjustable”. No source located reconciles the two descriptions.

The sources disagree on dates and on character, and the disagreements are recorded rather than resolved:

  • When the T05 arrived. Gaylord’s 2011 date is “sometime around the year 2000”. In 2023 he examined a 34 whose compression tube is stamped with the production date “12-95” and called its trigger a T05, while noting that it “differs from every Diana trigger drawing I have examined. It is closest to the T05 … but the later T05 (the one on Diana drawings) has a different safety … and even a somewhat different trigger blade. The trigger blade in this rifle is plastic.”7 The owner of that same rifle, writing later in the same series, said: “I think it is a T01.”16 Diana’s own T05 parts drawing for the 34 is dated 05.2004.17 A plastic-bladed trigger was therefore on at least one 34 by December 1995, and whatever it should be called, the tidy “T01 until 2000, T05 after” story is too tidy.
  • Which is better. In 2011 Gaylord judged the T06 “a fine sporting trigger” that “offers no substantial improvements over the T05”, with smooth travel in stage two where the T05 had none: “it isn’t any better or worse than the T05; it’s just different.”18 In 2023 he wrote that the T05 “is the finest in the Diana trigger line” and that Diana “simplified [the T06] slightly from the T05 — probably to lower production costs”.7 Both statements are his; they are twelve years apart.

2.5 The Rule That Matters: Trigger and Piston Go Together

The single most useful fact in this volume for an owner is Gaylord’s, and it is stated without qualification: “The T06 trigger requires a different piston to work. It looks the same as the one in the T05 guns, but the lockup surfaces on the piston rod are different and must be configured to mesh with a T06 trigger. Making the switch isn’t just a matter of replacing the modular trigger unit, but the piston, as well.”6 And from the third part of the same series: “a T01 trigger can also use the same piston as the T05.”18

In other words, a T01 or T05 rifle can take the other of those two triggers but not a T06 on its own, and a T06 rifle cannot take a T01 or T05 unit. Diana’s parts list for the T06 Mod. 34 bears this out by listing the piston (“Kolben mont.”, 30777000) as its own part number, separately from the complete trigger unit (“Schloss komplett”, 30784400).9 The practical rule is to identify the trigger before ordering a trigger, a piston, or a tune kit whose parts touch the piston rod.

2.6 The 34 EMS

Diana’s timeline for 2019 reads: “DIANA revolutioniert das Kipplauf-Druckluftgewehr mit dem neuen 34 EMS (Easy Modular System)”, Diana revolutionises the break-barrel air rifle with the new 34 EMS.11 The catalogue lists what “modular” means: exchangeable sights, “adjustable barrel alignment with improved locking mechanism”, an exchangeable barrel “with a 1/2 in UNF muzzle thread”, a two-piece cocking lever with polymer inlays, and conversion to Diana’s N_TEC gas piston.12 Gaylord, who saw it at the 2020 SHOT Show, gives the thread as “1/2-inch by 20 UNF” and describes an articulated cocking link and shims “to adjust the barrel droop”.13

The launch did not deliver all of that. Gaylord’s March 2021 test rifle came without the shims, alignment bars, spare barrels, gas spring or instructions for any of them, and his judgement was harsh: “In the 18 years that I have been writing this blog, this is the harshest criticism I have ever given a new product.” By September 2021 he wrote that “the barrel is supposed to be changeable, but not by the user” and that the gas-piston parts “don’t seem to have materialized”.13 Diana’s 2024 manual for the 34 EMS confirms the first point: “If you wish to change the barrel, please contact your specialized dealer.”19

The EMS trigger caused its own confusion. Diana’s catalogue calls it a T06. Gaylord wrote in 2021 that “this is no T06 trigger … It’s something new”. The explanation came in December 2023 from Tom Gore of Vortek, who makes tuning parts for the rifle, quoted by Gaylord: “This trigger is not a T06 trigger. It is a T06 that has been modified to accept an N-TEC gas spring that Diana never produced for the 34 EMS.”13 The EMS piston rod is also different: it is a loose part, “not attached to anything”, sitting inside the piston so that a gas spring can replace it.13 Tune kits for the older 34 are marked by Vortek as “Not designed for the new EMS34”.20

The rifle itself tested well. Gaylord’s EMS put ten JSB Exact Heavy pellets into 0.392 inch at 10 meters and ten Crosman Premier Heavies into 0.619 inch at 25 yards, and he wrote that it shot “exactly like” a 34 tuned with a Vortek kit.13

2.7 Full-Power and F Versions

Germany limits freely sold air guns to 7.5 joules. Diana’s parts list for the T06 Mod. 34 carries two mainsprings, “Druckfeder” 30153400 and “Druckfeder (F)” 30323600, the latter described in English as “mainspring (reduced power)”, and two piston seals, one marked (F).9 The 2006 flyer says the 34 Classic is “also available in free-sale F version”, and the current catalogue’s energy footnote says “energy varies according to state laws”.412 A 34 sold new in the United States would be the full-power version. A rifle that came into the country second-hand from Germany may not be, and the only reliable test is a chronograph (Volume 6).

2.8 How to Identify a 34

No single source gives a complete identification key, and no published serial-number table for the 34 was found. The checks below are assembled from the sources cited in this volume. Taken together they place most rifles in a generation.

2.9 The Rifle Documented Here

As of September 2026 the owner’s sheet does not record which generation the rifle documented here belongs to. It records the maker as “RWS”, which fits any US-market 34, and a 19.5-inch rifled barrel, which fits every standard-length 34 but not the 15.5-inch 34 C. The trigger, stock, safety release, scope base and date stamp would place it, and these are listed as questions for the owner rather than inferred.
