Keeping One Running — Maintenance, Repair, Calibration and the CRT Problem

What the makers told operators to clean, test and replace, the faults their troubleshooting tables expected, where the parts come from now, and what a dead picture tube means for each family of gun

An arcade gun was designed to be serviced. Every manual in this dive has a cleaning instruction, a test screen, a calibration routine, a troubleshooting table and replacement procedures for the parts that fail. This volume collects them, so that a collector with one cabinet and no manual knows what the maker expected to go wrong, and then takes up the problem the makers did not foresee: the end of the cathode-ray tube.

Opening a gun is covered here only as far as the manuals cover it. Repairs and conversions of guns as hobby projects (new sensors in old shells, recoil added to guns that never had it) belong to Modding Classic Light Guns (planned).

6.1 The Makers’ Maintenance Schedules

Table 1 — The Makers' Maintenance Schedules

IntervalTaskCabinets and wording
DailyClean the gun lens”Clean the gun lens every day to keep it precise” (Time Crisis II);1 “Clean the gun lenses everyday … Do not use detergents or chemicals” (Time Crisis 3);2 “Clean the tip of the barrel everyday” (Time Crisis 4)3
DailyClean the screen-side IR filters”Clean the following sensor section’s filters (20 locations) on the Monitor Mask everyday” (Time Crisis 4)3
Each cash collectionCamera lens, gun cables, switch test, calibration, IR sensorsAliens Armageddon’s “five-step procedure every time you empty the cash box”4
WeeklyRecalibrateBig Buck Hunter Pro recommends “a recalibration after every week of operation”5
After any move or gun repairRecalibrate”Recalibrate the guns any time the game is moved or the guns are repaired, replaced or swapped” (Aliens Armageddon)4
After a board, ROM, RAM or battery changeRecalibrateTerminator 26
Six-monthlyGrease the pedal plungerTime Crisis 4 (the pedal, not the gun)3

Two cleaning rules recur. Use a dry soft cloth and nothing else on a lens (“Do not use detergents or chemicals”, Time Crisis 3 and 423), and never push cleaner into the barrel: Maximum Force and CarnEvil both say to apply it “to a clean cloth or cotton swab” and “Do not apply cleaner directly into the gun barrel!”78 Atari Games’ summary applies to every optical and infrared gun: “No amount of calibration and testing can fix a dirty optical system, loose components, defective cables, etc.”7

6.2 Calibration, Family by Family

Table 2 — Calibration, Family by Family

FamilyProcedure in the manualsStored in
OpticalShoot a target or targets at “normal playing distance” with the gun’s sights; Area 51 holds the trigger “until the screen stops flashing”;9 Maximum Force and CarnEvil say to stand “directly behind the gun holder and extend the cable to its full length” and to fire “one at a time”;78 Virtua Cop offers default and manual adjustment per player10Game board
PositionalThree targets, top left, centre, bottom right, with “the sight on the gun. DO NOT use the red circles” (Operation Thunderbolt);11 “INITIATE EEPROMS” (Space Gun);12 three targets to CMOS RAM (Terminator 2)6EEPROM or battery-backed RAM
InfraredGun Initialize: crosshair check over the whole screen, then shoot targets “in the order” shown, holding the gun “straight. Do not tilt” (Time Crisis 4);3 IR Gun Calibration (Terminator Salvation)13Game board

Two cautions from the manuals deserve to be read before calibrating anything. First, a positional gun calibrated with a worn pot or a faulty gun stores bad data, and on Beast Busters bad data froze the game on power-up; SNK had boards returned under warranty that “were simply in need of proper Gun Aim Calibration”.14 Second, calibrate in the lighting the cabinet will be played in: “Turn room lights down to reduce glare” (CarnEvil);8 “Reduce light levels and recalibrate guns” (Maximum Force).7

Sega’s Virtua Cop manual adds an instruction that applies to every gun with soldered switches: “Take out the microswitch by removing the soldering from it … Solder the new microswitch and assemble the controller”, and “be sure to perform sighting check in the test mode when the controller parts are replaced.”20

6.4 Parts Today

The manuals’ part numbers are the starting point, because the makers reused parts across games (Volume 1): a Namco ST-0860A2 solenoid or 296-467 sensor board fits more than one Time Crisis; a Sega JPT-2030 sensor unit or 838-13145-02 LED board serves House of the Dead III, Ghost Squad and House of the Dead 4; an Atari Games A051987-01 gun board is in both Area 51 and Maximum Force.

Beyond salvage, the evidence found for this dive is thin. Collectors on the Arcade-Projects forum rank the options for a Time Crisis-family cabinet as “namco best, happ with recoil works, happ without recoil will still function”, and add that “sourcing new Namco gun shells is pretty difficult”.21 Happ, now Suzo-Happ, listed replacement optical guns and a replacement solenoid for Namco recoil guns; its product pages refused connections on 2026-10-19 and could not be read, so no part numbers or availability are given here.

Raw Thrills’ manuals carry Happ-style numbers throughout (96-, 95-, 43- prefixes) and name a distributor on every page;4 parts for the 2010s cabinets are still sold through the distributor network, at prices this dive did not collect.

Figure 1 — What each gun family needs when the original display dies. Optical guns depend on the CRT's beam timing, so the choice is a working tube of the original type or a different gun system. Positional guns do not see the screen and only need recalibrating. Infrared guns see emitters in the mask, so any display works if the emitters stay where they were relative to the picture. Own work.

Why a flat panel defeats every timing gun is told once, in History of Light Guns Volume 6: no scanning beam, a frame buffer that delays the picture, and an image held rather than drawn. For an arcade owner the consequence depends entirely on the family.

Optical (family A). The gun measures the moment a scanning beam passes its aim point, against the video timing the board produces. The manuals were written for 15 kHz direct-view tubes (Time Crisis 3’s is “27-inch color monitor CGA”2) or, later, CRT projection. A scan converter or a modern projector that stores the frame before showing it breaks the measurement; a Time Crisis owner on the Arcade-Projects forum put it as “My projector is a DLP so won’t play the gun anyway as it’s buffering the video”, and collectors there are blunt that the Time Crisis 3 guns “will not function without an RGB CRT based display”.2122 There are two honest options:

  1. Keep a CRT of the original type working. That means a 15 kHz arcade monitor or chassis of matching size, kept bright (CarnEvil’s flash setting is the reminder that a tired tube is a tired gun8). The partial rescues and their limits are in History of Light Guns Volume 6.
  2. Replace the gun system, not just the screen. A modern infrared or border-tracking gun cannot speak to the original game board’s gun inputs as the manuals describe them, so this route normally means running the game where the new gun is supported. The guns are surveyed in Open-Source Firmware §1.10 (Sinden, AimTrak, GUN4IR, RS3 Reaper and the open firmware), and running arcade software on other hardware belongs to Arcade Hardware (planned). The cabinet, shell, holster, pedal and recoil can be kept.

The makers themselves planned for the end of a cabinet’s game: the UK Lethal Enforcers manual offers a conversion kit (33059) that turns the cabinet into “a standard Jamma cabinet when the game has reached the end of its useful life”.16

Positional (family B). Nothing in the gun cares what the display is. Any monitor that accepts the board’s video at the original size and position will do, followed by the three-point calibration. Midway’s own Revolution X went into Terminator 2 cabinets with a “T2 Retrofit” switch setting,23 and positional cabinets were still being built for LCDs in 2014 (Aliens Armageddon fixed-gun, Deadstorm Pirates SE). Volume 3 has the parts.

Infrared (families C and D). The gun sees the emitters, not the picture, so the display can be changed. What must be kept is the geometry the calibration assumes: the mask and its LED boards (or Raw Thrills’ IR units on the monitor assembly) in the same place relative to the picture, the 60 cm minimum distance and the angle limits that Time Crisis 4 states,3 the lighting rules, and the frequency jumper on alternate cabinets in a row.18

6.6 Safety

The manuals’ own warnings, in the order a home owner is likely to meet them:

  • CRT high voltage. Every manual warns that the monitor holds high voltage after power-off; the Ghost Squad manual adds that repair “should be performed only be those technical personnel who have knowledge of electricity”.17 Point Blank lists an interlock switch among its cabinet parts,24 and Taito’s Operation Wolf interlock “automatically disconnect[s] power to the game when the drawer assembly is pulled out”.25
  • Lenses. “Do not remove the lenses from the Gun Assys when discarding the machine. Detached lenses can converge sunlight, causing a fire, blindness or burns.”2
  • Hot solenoids. Ghost Squad’s burn warning is quoted in Solenoid Recoil Volume 1.
  • Weight. The Terminator Salvation monitor assembly alone weighs 438 lb (199 kg);13 Time Crisis 3 SD’s front assembly 530 lb and the whole machine about 750 lb.2 The manuals specify two or more people and caster and leveller procedures.
  • Earth. Aliens Armageddon’s “Important: Be sure to reconnect this wire!” on the coil plate’s ground lead,4 and Operation Wolf’s earth pin on the gun connector,26 are the reminder that a metal gun on a cable is part of the cabinet’s safety earth.

6.7 What could not be verified

  • Current availability and prices of any replacement gun or part. Suzo-Happ’s pages refused connections; no other seller page was read.
  • Whether any product interfaces a modern IR gun to an original optical-gun game board. None was found in a primary source; the route described above is the one the sources support.
  • Display compatibility of the infrared cabinets with replacement LCDs. Inferred from the system design (emitters in the mask); no maker’s statement was found.
