Rifles, Suppressors, Availability and Cost

What the rifle makers list in October 2026, the twist and muzzle thread each one uses, what a .452 bore asks of a suppressor, and what a round costs on the makers' own pages

8.1 Who makes a rifle for it

The AR-15 dive’s list of rifles in the calibre (“Ruger, Savage, Mossberg and Remington” bolt actions, the Ruger No. 1, Ruger’s AR-556 MPR, Franklin Armory’s XO-26, and Bushmaster’s own) came from an encyclopaedia entry. Checked against the makers’ own pages on 19 October 2026:

The Ruger list was built by reading every one of the 93 product-line pages linked from ruger.com’s home page, so a .450 model missing from it is not on Ruger’s site. The “not confirmed” row means only that; several of those makers are reported by retailers to have made .450 rifles, and some may still.

8.2 Bolt actions

Ruger’s price is the “Suggested Retail” on the spec sheet; Savage’s is the price in the SKU page’s product data. The Hawkeyes are marked “Limited Availability” with no price. Savage’s calibre page also lists the 110 Core Hunter, 110 Trail Blazer and 110 Trail Blazer XP in .450; their .450 SKUs were not read individually, so they are not in the table.

Two observations from that table:

  • Every bolt gun is a short, light, low-capacity rifle, three or four rounds from a single-stack magazine, 5.8 to 8.1 pounds. The cartridge’s .500-inch body costs capacity in a bolt gun just as in an AR.
  • The two makers chose opposite twists, and every model of each follows its maker. That is the next section’s subject.

8.3 AR-15s

The AR-15 in .450 Bushmaster is mostly a parts-built rifle: an upper receiver with a .450 barrel, a .450/.458 bolt, and single-stack magazines on any standard lower. Building and feeding one, including the bolt, gas, buffer and magazine problem, is the AR-15 dive’s subject.

My own rifle uses a Bear Creek Arsenal 16-inch, 1:24 barrel (Volume 1). Retail listings describe Bear Creek’s .450 barrels as 16-inch, 1:24, 4150 chrome-moly or 416R stainless, with a carbine-length gas system; Bear Creek’s own product page was not read, so those details are given as the retailers’ and not confirmed here.

8.4 Single shots and the rest

Single-shot rifles in .450 Bushmaster have been made, and Ruger’s No. 1 product page still offers a .450 Bushmaster instruction manual, but no current single-shot model in the calibre was found on a maker’s page read for this dive. For Illinois, where a deer rifle must be a single shot until 1 January 2027 (Volume 7), a repeater “manufactured or modified” to hold one round is the alternative the IDNR describes.

8.5 Choosing by twist

From Volume 4, in one paragraph:

  • For supersonic factory loads, either twist works. The published bullets are stable at 1:24 with a factor of about three to spare.
  • For heavy subsonic loads, 1:16 is the safe choice. Steinel states that its 425-grain copper subsonic “will not stabilize with 1:24”; Hornady gives no twist for its 395-grain lead-core Sub-X; the arithmetic says a 1:24 barrel runs out of stability for a 395-grain bullet at about 1.24 inches of length.

So a buyer who intends to hunt suppressed with subsonic ammunition has a reason to prefer a 1:16 barrel, which today means a Ruger. A buyer who will shoot supersonic hunting loads does not need to care. An owner of a 1:24 rifle who wants to try subsonics should test them on paper at 100 yards first, looking for keyholes.

8.6 Muzzle threads

The SAAMI standard does not specify a muzzle thread. The makers who publish one for this calibre agree:12

Table 3 — Muzzle threads

MakerThread
Ruger (American Gen II, Ranch Gen II, Hawkeye Hunter)11/16”-24
Savage (110 Trail Hunter Lite V2, Ridge Hunter, Scout V2)11/16x24

That is the same thread on both makers’ current bolt guns, and it is a common big-bore pattern. It is not a standard for the calibre. AR-15 .450 barrels are threaded by their makers to their own choice: Bear Creek Arsenal’s own listing for its current 16-inch .450 barrel gives 5/8 x 32, a thread more often seen on .30-calibre barrels and devices, and Tromix threads its .450 barrels 5/8-24 (AR-15 .450 dive, Volume 4 §4.7b).4 Update, 2026-10-19: earlier editions called the Bear Creek figure a retailer’s that Bear Creek’s own page did not confirm; its page now lists it. As the AR-15 dive said and it bears repeating: measure the thread, or get it from the barrel maker in writing, before buying anything that screws onto the muzzle. A muzzle device on the wrong thread can strip, or come loose and be struck by the bullet.

8.7 Suppressors

The hub has three suppressor dives, and this section only adds what is specific to the cartridge:

  • Bore. A .452-inch bullet needs a can rated for .45 or larger, with an explicit rating for the cartridge or for a pressure and energy class it falls into. Suppressors by Caliber covers how calibre ratings work.
  • Speed. Every supersonic .450 factory load leaves the muzzle at 1,900 to 2,200 fps (Volume 3). A suppressor removes muzzle blast but not the supersonic crack of the bullet, so these loads are hearing-protection loads, not quiet ones. Only two factory loads are subsonic: Hornady’s 395-grain Sub-X (1,050 fps from 20 inches) and Steinel’s 425-grain solid copper (1,023 to 1,080 fps).
  • The subsonic trade. Volume 4 sets it out: a short barrel keeps the subsonic loads quiet in the cold but brings the Sub-X close to its 900-fps expansion floor, and a heavy monolithic subsonic may need a 1:16 twist. Volume 5 puts the Sub-X’s honest hunting range at about 100 yards.
  • The law. Federal registration and approval are unchanged, the federal tax has been $0 since 1 January 2026, Michigan permits hunting with a lawfully possessed suppressor, and Indiana’s DNR says the same for its deer seasons (Volume 7). Suppressor Law has the detail, and How Suppressors Work the mechanism.

8.8 Ammunition: availability and cost per round

Prices shown on the makers’ own pages, 19 October 2026, for a box of 20:5678

Table 4 — Ammunition: availability and cost per round

LoadPrice / 20Per round
Federal American Eagle 260 gr FMJ$39.99$2.00
Remington UMC 260 gr FMJ$39.99$2.00
Steinel 240 gr JHP$51.19$2.56
Steinel 425 gr subsonic SCHP$66.34$3.32
Federal Power-Shok 300 gr$68.99$3.45
Remington Core-Lokt 260 gr$69.99$3.50
Remington Premier AccuTip 260 gr$69.99$3.50
Steinel 280 gr brass solid$70.58$3.53
Federal Fusion 260 gr$76.99$3.85
Steinel 250 gr SCHP$78.99$3.95
Hornady (four loads)not shown on page
Winchester (two loads)”$” / ”$$”

These are the makers’ list prices, not street prices; retailers routinely sell below them, and Hornady and Winchester sell through retailers rather than showing a price. On the makers’ own figures, practice ammunition is $2.00 a round and hunting ammunition $3.45 to $3.95. The AR-15 dive’s Volume 6 compares that with the alternatives; the shelf price I recorded for the Hornady FTX is in that volume and is not repeated here.

Availability is broad by the measure that matters: four large makers (Hornady, Federal, Remington, Winchester) and at least one boutique loader catalogue the cartridge, none of them is the company it is named after, and the four Hornady loads alone run from a 245-grain cup-and-core to a 395-grain subsonic.

8.9 Brass

Starline makes .450 Bushmaster brass, #3220, listed as “1.693 - 1.697 O.A.L. Small Rifle Primer,” at $0.84 each in a box of 250 ($210.00), $0.77 for 500 and $0.74 for 1,000, with free shipping, “Available Now” on 19 October 2026.9 The AR-15 dive could not confirm Starline’s product because the page then returned an error; it is listed now. The listing also settles the primer size from a maker, not only from the load-data publishers: small rifle. The case length, 1.693 to 1.697 inches, sits inside SAAMI’s 1.700 −.010. Loading it is Loading the .450 Bushmaster’s subject.

8.10 After Michigan

Michigan’s limited firearms deer zone was the single largest legal reason to buy this cartridge, and it ended on 12 September 2026 (Volume 7). What that does to prices and shelf stock in Michigan is unknown; the makers’ prices above fell slightly between September and October, which is far too short a span to read anything into.

What it does not change is the case for the cartridge on its merits, which the earlier volumes set out: a 200-yard supersonic hunting round with a wide bullet and moderate recoil, in an AR-15 or a light bolt gun, with a subsonic option and broad factory support. In Ohio and Illinois it is still one of the cartridges the law is written around. In Michigan, Indiana and Iowa it is now one legal choice among many, and has to be chosen for what it does.
