Original Consoles · Volume 6
Where It Runs — Original Consoles, Route by Route and Game by Game
One table for every original console and every route a modern gun can take to it; what each console needs plugged in; the per-game quirks the sources record; and what to test first with the project's gun
6.1 How to read the table
Each row is an original console and its gun; each column a route a modern gun can take to it (Volume 1, §1.5). “Yes” means built and reported working by its author or seller; nothing in this dive was played for it. “Proposed” means the console box or bench mode of Volume 5, with the step of its bench plan. The family column says whether the console reads data from the gun (family 1, Volume 2 and Volume 4) or times a pulse (family 2, Volume 3).
The same games on emulators are in the other Platform Support dives’ tables: PC (Windows), Volume 6, Linux and Retro Distros, Volume 7 and MiSTer FPGA, Volume 6.
6.2 The matrix

The same, as text, for the routes that work today:

| Dreamcast | Dreamcast Gun | Light Gun Commando (dsPIC33); an LED into a real Dreamcast Gun | |
| Xbox | Third-party guns | Light Gun Commando (January 2023) | Unpublished |
| PlayStation 3 | GunCon 3 | None; protocol described in RPCS3 | |
| Wii | Wii Remote | A Wii Remote in any shell | Works on any display already |
| Xbox 360, PS4, PS5, Switch | None | Not as a light gun |
6.3 Console by console: what has to be plugged in
Table 2 — 6.3 Console by console: what has to be plugged in
| Console | Gun side | Video | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NES | Timing box cable in controller port 2 | Composite through the box | White-level gate on; LightGunVerter adds a sustain capacitor for NES games |
| Master System | Timing box cable in the controller port | Composite through the box | White level off |
| Mega Drive, Mega-CD | Timing box cable | Composite | The guns themselves: Console Light Guns, Volume 3 |
| Saturn | Timing box cable | Composite | A button for Start (LightGunVerter maps the Wii Remote’s A) |
| PlayStation, GunCon | Translator on the controller port (ports 1 and 2 for two players) | None needed by the translator | Use the game’s calibration screen; NTSC and PAL need different ranges (Volume 2, §2.2) |
| PlayStation, Konami | Timing box cable on the controller port’s IRQ10 line | Composite | The hardest latch (Volume 3, §3.7) |
| PlayStation 2 | Translator on USB: top port player 1, bottom port player 2 | None needed by the translator | Calibration-shot button for Time Crisis; per-game scale |
| Dreamcast | Timing cable on the controller bus (Light Gun Commando) or an LED into a real gun | Composite, or VGA with separate sync | North American games refuse the gun (Console Light Guns, Volume 5) |
| Xbox | Translator on an Xbox controller plug, full-speed USB | None for an imitation | The game’s calibration report must be accepted (Volume 4, §4.2) |
For every route: the console’s picture can go to any display, through any scaler, because the translators never look at it and the timing boxes take their timing from the composite signal before the display. A camera gun needs its own references at the screen: the project’s gun its infrared emitters, a Sinden a white border drawn by a scaler.
6.4 Per-game notes
Only notes a source records are listed; titles with nothing recorded are left out rather than guessed.
PlayStation (GunCon)
- Die Hard Trilogy (PAL) has its own SindenPS firmware,
GCON45-PAL-DieHardTrilogy.hex, beside the general NTSC and PAL builds. - Time Crisis, Point Blank series: named by SindenPS among working games; Point Blank 1 to 3, Time Crisis, Project Titan, Judge Dredd, Maximum Force and Resident Evil Survivor are on the Time Breaker gun’s confirmed list.
- Reload: an off-screen shot is the “no light” reply (X 0001h, Y 000Ah per PSX-SPX; SindenPS uses Y 0005h, the other listed error value).
PlayStation (Konami)
- Lethal Enforcers I & II, Project Horned Owl use the Konami gun (Console Light Guns, Volume 4) and need a timing route, not a GunCon translator.
PlayStation 2 (GunCon 2), from PCSX2’s per-game table and comments unless noted:
Table 3 — PlayStation 2 (GunCon 2), from PCSX2's per-game table and comments unless noted
| Game | Note |
|---|---|
| Time Crisis II, Time Crisis 3, Crisis Zone | Calibrate with the black-frame sequence (a calibration-shot button on an imitation). Time Crisis II also accepts a GunCon in the matching controller port, which a GunCon 2 on USB overrides (Namco’s manual) |
| Time Crisis – Crisis Zone (US) | Different constants at 480i and 480p (PCSX2 keeps the 480p line commented out) |
| Virtua Cop – Elite Edition | A 512-pixel-wide picture and an X scale of about 110 per cent, the largest in the table; named working by SindenPS and by Ben Ryves’s V-USB imitation |
| Endgame (Europe) | “Guncon2 needs to be connected to USB port 2”; X scale 112 per cent |
| Gunfighter 2 (Europe) | The smallest X scale in the table, 84.5 per cent |
| Gunvari Collection (Japan) | Different constants at 480i and 480p |
| Vampire Night | Different centre and height per region (US 640 × 228) |
| Dino Stalker, Ninja Assault, Resident Evil – Dead Aim, Starsky & Hutch, Resident Evil Survivor 2, Guncom 2 | In the table with their own scales. Light Gun Commando added Wii Nunchuk and Classic Controller support for games such as Dead Aim (4 January 2023) |
| Region | ”Some PS2 games are G-Con2 only, and compatibility varies by region” (Sinden wiki) |
Xbox
- The House of the Dead III: stuck on its calibration screen until the imitation accepted the gun’s calibration report; played on a real Xbox with Light Gun Commando. Silent Scope also played.
Dreamcast
- North American releases refuse the gun (Console Light Guns, Volume 5). Which Dreamcast games Light Gun Commando ran was not stated.
NES
- Duck Hunt: LightGunVerter’s co-op mode lets two Wii Remotes share the one Zapper input, “the B button … will take control of where the console thinks the gun is pointing”, making a rudimentary two-player game.
6.5 If the goal is simply to play these games
The project’s gun is the subject of this dive, but anyone reading it to play original-console gun games on a flat panel today has three practical choices, in order of effort:
- Emulate. The project’s gun, or any absolute-mouse gun, plays every one of these consoles’ gun games on a PC, a Pi or a MiSTer (PC (Windows), Linux and Retro Distros, MiSTer FPGA). MiSTer is the most faithful, because its cores fire the console’s own sensor line.
- Buy the PlayStation route. The Time Breaker gun, $129.99 at Stone Age Gamer on 2026-10-24, for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 only (Volume 2, §2.10).
- Build SindenPS with a Sinden gun, for the same two consoles (Volume 2, §2.8).
For the NES, Master System, Saturn and the others, a timing box is the only original-hardware route, and none is for sale.
6.6 What to test first with the project’s gun
The bench plan of Volume 5, §5.10, as games:
Table 4 — The bench plan of [Volume 5, §5.10](/light-guns/platform-support/original-consoles/vol-5/#510-a-bench-plan), as games
| Step | Console and route | First games | What it proves |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | PlayStation 2, bench GunCon 2 mode in the fork, on the GunCon 2 fallback gun (OC-3) | Time Crisis II, then Virtua Cop – Elite Edition | The gun’s aim, calibration and the black-frame trick on real hardware; the largest per-game scale difference |
| 3 | PlayStation 2, console box | Same | The box against the bench mode |
| 4 | PlayStation, console box (G-Con 45) | Time Crisis, Point Blank | The PlayStation port responder |
| 5 | Master System, then Saturn, then NES, console box with the sync separator | Any Light Phaser game; Virtua Cop; Duck Hunt | Timing; then the white-level gate |
6.7 What could not be verified
- Every “yes” in the matrix is the author’s or seller’s report; none was reproduced for this dive.
- The SNES with any modern gun on real hardware; no report found.
- Which Dreamcast and Saturn titles the timing boxes were tried with, beyond those named.
- The Time Breaker gun’s full list and its behaviour in the per-game cases above.
- PlayStation 2 games on backward-compatible PlayStation 3s through any route.
