The capstone: how to live with a C96 once it’s built or bought, and a one-stop quick reference to laminate for the bench. Legal specifics are Vol 11; this is the day-to-day.
12.1 Range use (9×19)
- Ammo: standard-pressure 9×19 only. No +P / +P+ in a vintage action or a freshly fabricated one without formal proof testing (Vol 3 §3.5). The locked-breech action is fine at standard pressure (~35k psi, near the 7.63’s ~30k).
- First firing of a build: verify headspace (go/no-go) and lockup, then proof/break-in remotely (lanyard or rest) before shooting it by hand — standard practice for any first-fire of a fabricated or rebarreled gun (Vols 7–9).
- Disconnector check: confirm true semi-auto (one shot per trigger pull, crisp reset). A doubling C96 is a malfunction and a legal problem (Vol 6 §6.2, Vol 11 §11.3) — stop and fix.
- Function: charger-load from the top (or the magazine, on detachable-mag variants); mind the bolt-hold-open on empty and the manual-of-arms quirks (Vol 6).
12.2 Maintenance
- Takedown is the no-pin interlock sequence (Vol 6 §6.3) — clamp the frame for the mainspring/rocker steps; never force it.
- Clean the bore and chamber; keep the lockwork lightly oiled; watch the firing-pin spring and extractor (the usual wear/breakage points).
- Log work and round count per piece in
../00-inventory/{nickname}.md.
12.3 Storage & transport
- Store unloaded, secured per your jurisdiction; a C&R/antique still warrants safe storage.
- Transport: follow Vol 11 / state law. Note the shoulder-stock pivot (Vol 11 §11.2) — don’t transport pistol + fitting stock in a way that creates an unintended SBR/constructive-possession situation.

12.4 Cheatsheet — laminate this
Variant ID (read the hammer first): spur (proto) → cone (1896–99) → large ring (1899–1904) → small ring (1904+). Then: receiver sides (milled/shallow/flat), barrel length, chamber marking, safety type, caliber tells. (Vol 4)
Dating (approx., verify in a reference): “SYSTEM MAUSER” earliest → “WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER OBERNDORF” from ~360 → flat-side/large-ring ~15k (1899) → Bolo ~29k → small-ring/6-groove ~40k → 9mm Export 40–80k → “Ns” safety ~200k (1912) → Red 9 1916 → 1920 reworks → banner/post-war ~600k → M30 ~800k. ~1M total. Dimensions (verify before machining): OAL 312 mm (5.5″) / 271 mm (Bolo); barrel 140 mm std (Bolo 99 mm); weight ~1.13 kg; bore .3008″ (7.63) → .355″ for 9×19; rifling 6-groove RH (4-groove early). (Vol 6, ../blueprints/README.md)
